For those of us who favor symmetrical dials, the power reserve indicator can be a bit of a drawback, but this kind of off-beat design was clearly intentional. These are the first movements to not only be made by Nomos, but entirely designed by them as well. The curved sapphire crystal adds a little height, but not much. Instead, there is a simple date at 6:00. The short answer is really, really thin.

The first watch is a 36mm Club, with the familiar long-lugged case, and the other two are 38mm Clubs, all in stainless steel. The importance of being able to make escapements in-house cannot be overstated when it comes to ensuring a manufacture's future capacity and control over its production. And as with the first Club Campus watches from two years ago, these new models have closed stainless steel backs rather than open views of the movements inside. The mint is an unusual color, but one that adds just a little bit of personality without going overboard. Today we have three new references in the line to introduce. The current timeline has Nomos on track to complete the transition within two years.

For this watch though there's another benefit: the expanse of steel offers a space for custom engravings, whether it be for a gift or a self-purchase. Currently, all hand wound movements with the swing system have a power reserve complication. The 36mm has slightly more emphasis on the red and pink tones, while the similar 38mm model more prominently displays the bright blue SuperLuminova. The original and most popular line is the Tangente—this is the collection that put Nomos on the map. The primary characteristic of these movements, aside from their beauty, is their thinness. One of the reasons Nomos is such a celebrated brand is because it is one of the only companies in its price range that makes in house movements.

But, to debut the Swing System, Nomos created a new watch, the Metro, in collaboration with Berlin-based designer Mark Braun. Just 100 pieces will be made. Nomos plans to slowly transition all of its in-house calibers to utilize the Swing System, and certain older models are already available with the new escapement. Don't misunderstand me here — this is a great movement. Originally based on the design of the Peseux 7001, Nomos has redesigned it with their special touch and manufactured it to their high standards in house where it receives a strict 6 position adjustment. The long answer is 3.

I can already hear you ask—how thin is it? But more important than the prestige of an in house movement itself is how beautiful and well adjusted Nomos movements are. Depending on how you count them, Nomos has 11 separate lines of watches 12 if you consider the Doctors Without Borders models a separate collection and the collections are separated primarily by case design. It appears that the 39mm case will, at least initially, only have the white gold and yellow gold white dial models, with blued hands, as options. The three models offer different colors, but all in the same general family. Everything else can be perfect, but if you don't have a great escapement, you won't end up with a great watch. Finally, and most importantly, the Lambda will now be available in a smaller 39mm case—a much more versatile size, in my opinion.

I'm interested to see how they look in person and whether other collections might soon have a bracelet as an option. This confused us quite a bit because we had always taken Tangente to require being manually wound—but it turns out, Nomos just intended the Tangente line to be very thin. The Nacht model, with the dark dial, is the most distinctive, and offers something for those who don't want a light silvered dial. The Nomos Lambda also received a few important updates. They also come with a tool-free removal system, which should make transitioning from the bracelet to your favorite strap a simple enough undertaking. Nomos is a brand primarily known for a few great qualities: their iconic Bauhaus design, their beautiful movements and the fact that those movements are exclusively made in house.

The Metro, in Metro Datum form, is also available for the first time with a black dial. The Minimatik differs primarily in its lack of seriousness with its red lacquered hands and blue Arabic numerals—the Minimatik is a bolder, more colorful watch than Nomos typically makes, yet still retains classic Nomos Tangente-esque styling. These include the 4301 and 4401 and are available in the Tetra Kleene and Metro respectively. Personally, I like all three models pretty equally and think it really comes down to personal style here. The Metro is a handsome, slightly idiosyncratic watch, but at its heart is a serious technological development. They also have a very unique and elegantly simple bidirectional winding system that you can actually see working from the back. Currently, these movements are available only in the Lux and Lambda lines.
